Toowoomba Pipeline Letter to Residents May 2009 (pdf 367KB)
Population growth, combined with the drought, is straining Toowoomba's water supplies. To ensure local water infrastructure keeps pace with community need, a pipeline will be constructed to link Wivenhoe Dam with Cressbrook Dam. Toowoomba is Queensland's largest inland city. The Toowoomba Regional Council area has a population of 151,000, and 125,000 of those residents rely on surface water storages. The city's main supply is sourced from Cressbrook, Cooby and Perseverance dams and is supplemented with bore water. However, the Toowoomba region has been hit hard by the drought and recent rains have not sufficiently replenished these raw water supplies. The level of available drinking water in the three dams recently was less than 11% of their combined capacity.
